Ask a Social Media Manager: Should I Be On Facebook or Instagram?

When starting out on social media, it’s common for a small business owner or organization leader to gravitate towards one of two platforms–Facebook or Instagram. While you shouldn’t limit yourself to one social media platform, it can be helpful to start out on one platform and branch out into other platforms as your time and energy allows. So that leaves the question: which platform should you start with?

We have written more extensively on this topic, but an easy question to help you make this choice is this: how many photos do you have of your business or organization? Instagram is a very visual-centric platform, and if you don’t have many photos, videos, or graphics to post, you’ll likely find yourself getting stuck fairly quickly. Facebook places a little less emphasis on the visual side of posts, so it can be a good place to start if you don’t have photos just yet. However, if you do have an abundance of product photos that you’re longing to share, Instagram might be the perfect place for you!
