Question: Should I look at what other small businesses who offer similar products or services are doing on social media?

Answer: Yes! But not to copy and paste word-for-word. Instead, spend some time looking at other small businesses on Facebook or Instagram and noting what they’re doing that seems to work for them, or what doesn’t. You can use that to inform your own social media strategy and plan for what kind of content you’d like to make. Just remember that most people want to see something original–it’s okay to follow a trend or use another post as a jumping-off point, but copying it won’t help your business grow.

And while you’re at it, give some love to other businesses in the form of Likes or comments!
