As small business owners and organization leaders, there often isn’t much time in the day to pour into social media. However, a solid social media strategy can be the difference between a successful product, sale, or event, and a lackluster one.
Especially if you’re just starting out, building a social media strategy doesn’t have to take a lot of time. Time blocking, or planning out your day with specific times set aside for specific tasks, can help you focus on tasks like social media without taking up your whole day. Take a look below to see our suggestions on how to maximize the amount of time you can realistically set aside for social media.
If you have 15 minutes a day…
A good baseline to aim for is posting on Facebook or Instagram 2-3 times per week. More is always great, but a post every other day or so keeps your accounts current, and lets new followers know that the information on them is relatively up-to-date. Prioritize putting out 2-3 solid posts each week that address the most important aspects of your business or organization at the moment, including upcoming events, sales, changes to operations, and other important announcements. In your leftover time, try snapping some new product photos, answering messages and comments from customers, and taking the time to scroll a little. Be careful–you don’t want to get sucked into scrolling, but you do want to actively looking for inspiration from other businesses and organizations that you can put your own twist on and apply in the future.
If you have 30 minutes a day…
Prioritize doing the above: getting 2-3 posts published per week, and more if you feel comfortable. Now is also the time to start looking at other social media features that you can capitalize on with any extra time. For example, using Instagram Stories frequently is a great way to continue to engage your audience, provide them with more information, and ask for their feedback. Reels, or short videos, are also popular on Instagram and Facebook right now, and if you have time to experiment with them (even for just a few minutes a day), it can go a long way towards expanding your social media skills.
If you have an hour a day…
After you’ve focused on the basics, really dial in on taking your social media accounts to the next level. Maybe that means posting daily, or maybe that looks like hiring a professional photographer to get dozens of new photos that you can use for future posts. Maybe that means mastering the different ways to share updates on Instagram and Facebook–including posts, Stories, and Reels–or maybe that means expanding into YouTube or Pinterest if you think those platforms might be for you. Figure out what your goal for your social media strategy is, and go for it!
Remember, the goal with time blocking it to set a time and stick to it–while you should be aware of any comments or questions rolling in on social media, you shouldn’t have to be active on a platform 24/7 to have an effective strategy. Nor should you feel the need to accomplish everything at once. If you can stick to a consistent daily routine, you’ll likely see strong growth on social media over time.
