Question: When posting on social media, is it better to use photos or videos?

Answer: Strictly speaking, videos are gaining more traction across many social media platforms right now. However, there are a few parameters to consider when taking photos or videos specifically to post on social media:

  • Length of video
If your video is super long (longer than 3-5 minutes), then it might not be incredibly successful, unless you’re considering posting it on YouTube. On Instagram and Facebook, shorter videos tend to perform better, especially if you’re considering making Reels or Stories.
  • Quality of video
It’s often easier to get a high quality photo over a high quality video, due to camera and audio quality, as well as other factors. If you have good, natural lighting, a calm filming space (ex. no background noise such as traffic or conversations), and a plan in mind, definitely give filming a video a try! If not, it might be best to go with a photo or two.
  • Content of video
Specifically, is this a video that your followers will want to watch? If you aren’t sure if you can capture and keep your audience’s attention for all or most of the length of your video, a photo might be just as effective while also being easier for you.
