When you think of creative writing, you might think that one of the only options available to you is to write a novel. Writing a novel can be a fun and engaging pursuit, but it can also be an incredible amount of work, and some writers don’t necessarily want to follow one story or one set of characters for that length of time. Luckily, there are many other options available to you, which are all exciting and rewarding in their own right!

Let’s dive in…

If you have a way with words, try poetry!

There’s a great amount of freedom in writing poetry, even if you follow a very specific style. Whether you include a rhyming scheme or a specific structure or if you prefer to write free verse, poetry can be a great way to express yourself in a shorter form.

If you don’t want to write a full novel, try a short story!

Short stories are a great way to experiment with characters, scenes, and storylines without committing to a full novel. They can also become great inspiration for a novel down the line, but a great short story can stand on its own. Short stories can be especially fun too–there’s no need to tie up every loose end or give everyone a happy ending. Instead, you can try out lots of interesting scenarios and points-of-view.

If you have a personal story to tell, try a memoir!

Memoirs can also be fun to write–it’s almost like journaling, and in addition to being therapeutic, it can also be entertaining. Memoirs are also a great way to expand on the significance that a moment, person, or place had in your life–they don’t necessarily have to follow your entire life story.

If you have advice to give or like short nonfiction, try a blog!

Blogs are a great way to get your writing in front of an audience without committing to a long piece. This blog post goes into detail on the benefits of blogging, but in short, blogging can be an easy way to state your opinions or offer instruction–just make sure you have a niche.
