Ask a Social Media Manager: How Important are Images?

Question: I don’t always have a great image or video to use in my social media posts. Is having visual content important when I’m trying to create social media posts?

Answer: The short answer is yes. There are some social media platforms, like Instagram, that require you to have visual content in order to post. Other platforms, like Facebook or Twitter, don’t require images or videos in order to post, but generally speaking, posts are more successful when they include a visual, which makes sense–images, graphics, or videos can add more information to a post and are a great way to catch your viewer’s eye.

Now, if you don’t have a lot of visual content on hand, you may have to get creative. While not every post you make necessarily has to have a visual element, it’s good to plan ahead and try to stock up on product photos, behind-the-scenes videos, staff interviews, or other content that you can then build your social media posts around. You might consider hiring a professional photographer, but if your budget is tight, most smartphone cameras can do the job with a little experimentation! The same goes for graphics–depending on your time and expertise, you might want to hire a graphic designer, or you could experiment with the many design softwares available to download.
