Question: There are so many social media platforms out there. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat–sometimes, the list seems endless. Do I need to be on every social media platform possible?
Answer: The short answer is no! While it can be advantageous to have your business be active on as many social media platforms as possible, the reality is that it’s not often feasible to do so, especially as a small business owner or organization leader. Start off with one social media platform that you ideally already have some comfort with–for example, if you already use Facebook for personal use, try starting out by setting up a Facebook page for your business or organization. From there, you can work your way to other social media platforms, if you want to.
A few things to consider when you’re thinking about trying a new social media platform:
- Are your customers on that platform? For example, are your regular customers or target audience using Instagram already? If not, it doesn’t really make sense for you to invest your time on Instagram, as you’re not likely to see a strong return there.
- Are you savvy on that platform? If not, it might take you a lot of time to learn about all of the features that a new platform offers, which may take valuable time away from other aspects of your business or organization. Will that sacrifice be worth it for your business or organization?
- Does the platform make sense for your business or organization? For example, Pinterest places a high emphasis on strong visuals, and if you don’t have quality photos of products or events to use, a platform like Pinterest might not be worth your time. On the other hand, if you do have a lot of professional photos or images to show off, then maybe Pinterest is exactly where you want to invest your energy!
