In our New Year’s Resolutions blog post, we talked about setting small goals for yourself when approaching social media. It can be overwhelming to try to use social media as a small business owner–there are always new changes and features being added, as well as comments and questions to field from customers. It can be tempting to disengage from social media altogether, but that can be even worse for your business.
Luckily, there are some ways to make using social media more manageable:
Try to log on for ten minutes a day
As a business owner, you’re likely busy, and the last thing that you want to do is add one more thing to your To-Do list. But the easiest way to become more comfortable with a social media platform, especially a new one, is to log on for a set amount of time each day and experiment. Ten minutes a day will allow you to review and respond to any comments, as well as explore any features you might not be familiar with. You won’t become an expert overnight, but a little bit of time everyday might be more manageable than several larger chunks of time.
Focus on one new thing at a time
Maybe you don’t know a lot about Instagram Stories or Reels, or you’re still learning how to make an optimal Facebook post. Try to focus on developing your skills in one area at a time, so that it won’t become too overwhelming. As a bonus–sometimes learning more about one feature will help you when you go to learn about another feature, so your knowledge can build on itself!
Follow helpful accounts
There are lots of social media accounts designed to give you tips on how to use social media more effectively (hint: we’re one of them–follow us on Instagram and Facebook!). While you’re browsing social media, try searching for these accounts and following them. Seeing regular tips and tricks popping up on social media is an easy way to learn more without much effort. Some great places to start are Hubspot and Sprout Social.
Talk to other small business owners
The more, the merrier! Seeking out support from other small business owners can be a great way to validate any of your own frustrations while hearing what works for other people in your field. Maybe there’s something that someone else is doing that you can benefit from, or vice versa!
