At Wreath Writing and Marketing Services, we specialize in utilizing Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for social media marketing. Each of these platforms has been around for years and has a high number of users. But how do they stack up against one another?
Twitter is a great platform for sharing short bits of information. Posts on Twitter, called Tweets, are limited to 280 characters, so it is best to use this platform to share brief and recent updates about your company or organization. Longer posts and opinion pieces can be saved for Facebook (which we’ll go over below).
While it is possible to share graphics and images via Twitter, if you have high quality photos of your products, those would probably be better featured on an Instagram account. Again, the emphasis on Twitter is on small pockets of information and links to longer articles, not necessarily on a photo album of images.
While Facebook can also be used for quick updates, its design is more suited to longer posts. The character limit for a Facebook post is 63,206 characters, although you don’t have to use every last one. Images can also be shared via Facebook, although the emphasis is still largely on the textual content.
Unlike Twitter and Facebook, Instagram is built around images and short videos. These pictures and videos can be captioned (which is a great way to include whatever textual information you may need to include), but other Instagram users are generally drawn in by edited and curated pictures. Unlike Twitter and Facebook, on Instagram, there is no post without a picture.
So what does this mean for you and your business?
While this variety in social media platforms and the kind of posts they are built for may seem confusing at first, you can use this variety to your advantage. If your business is centered around products or designs that are highly visual, you now know that posting pictures on an Instagram account will be an excellent way to showcase your work, while a Twitter account may not have the same effect. If you lead a community group that often provides a lot of information for its members and followers, Facebook may be a suitable platform for lengthy posts. Luckily, you don’t have to pick just one platform either. All three of these social media platforms can be used together to feature different aspects of your business or organization and serve individual purposes.
