Alt text is used to describe photos or visuals for those who might have visual impairments and not be able to see your images. Using alt text can thus increase the accessibility of your content, which is important ethically as well as allowing you to reach and interact with as many people as possible.
For this action item, take a look at the alt text for previous images on Facebook and Instagram, and consider writing your own in future posts. Alt text is often automatically generated, but it might not always be correct, which is why it can be helpful to craft it yourself. On Facebook, alt text can be accessed by clicking on a post you created and then clicking on the three little dots generally in the top right corner and looking for the directive “Change alt text.” On Instagram, you can add alt text under advanced settings when you create a post, or edit a preexisting post and select “Edit Alt Text” in the bottom right corner of the image.
