Should I Start A Blog For My Business?

A blog for your business might be something that you’ve been thinking about for a while–or it might be something that’s never crossed your mind. After all, do people still read blogs anymore?

If you’re reading this now, then the answer is yes! Besides us, many other businesses, organizations, and individuals use blogs to document a variety of topics–lifestyles, education, events, and more! But blogging can also be difficult and time-consuming, and while it can definitely be a valuable medium, it also might not be for you.

So how do you know if you should start a blog for your business? Read on to get a little guidance!

Do you have trouble narrowing down what you’re trying to say on social media?

Blogging typically involves long-form written content, so if you find yourself overflowing with information, a blog can be a helpful space for you to get it all out there! While social media posts are usually focused on small bites of content, a blog could be a space for you to expand on a topic, such as a product or service, or to further illustrate an event your business held.

As a bonus, blog posts are a great way to create content that can then be shared on social media!

Do you enjoy writing and web design?

Most blogging platforms, such as WordPress, are fairly straightforward–you usually don’t have to worry about building your blog from scratch. However, there is usually some formatting involved, and there’s definitely writing involved. If you’re naturally a writer, great! But if writing out posts sounds dull or difficult to you, your time may be better spent searching out other ways to reach your customers.

Do you have some ideas on what to write about?

Blogging isn’t always simple–it’s good for a business blog to be updated regularly, and you need to have something to write about in order to be frequently publishing blog posts. Try brainstorming ideas ahead of time as to what you could write about in a post, so that you aren’t facing a deadline with a complete lack of inspiration. Some ideas might include:

  • A recipe or tutorial to make a very basic version of one of your products. (For example, if you run a bakery, try sharing one of your sugar cookie recipes.)
  • A regular write-up of a special staff member.
  • A history of your business.
  • An in-depth look at one of your products or services, to show why one might need it.

If none of these ideas are resonating, and you find it difficult or time-consuming to think of more, then starting a blog might prove to be more trouble than it’s worth for you.

Do you have an online audience?

A business blog is usually hosted on your business’ website, so if you don’t yet have a website, or your customer base doesn’t regularly check your website, then a blog might not be an effective strategy for you. However, if you’d like to encourage more people to visit your website, or you have a customer base that is often online, a blog could be a great way to meet them where they’re at!
